“I hate to hear you talk about all women as if they were fine ladies instead of rational creatures. None of us want to be in calm waters all our lives.” - Jane Austen, Persuasion
Artist Statement
I have lived my entire life with a sense of longing. A persistent and insatiable desire, presumably common among most women, to feel seen, heard, and understood. Creating art has provided a voice that I never realized I had. One that people seem to listen to and absorb in a different way than spoken word. This series of paintings explores the female experience; focusing on the influence friendships, relationships, family, and music can have on a girl's transition into womanhood.
Each painting contains some form of self representation, as well as an attempt to depict a shared female experience. Growing up and becoming a woman has taught me a lot about myself and others. The most important message being, that we are doing ourselves a disservice by staying silent about our life experiences and struggles, not only as women but as human beings as well. This series of paintings aims to be a voice for the women and girls who still feel voiceless.
